Novelty Yarns

Week 3 = Catalog Yarn
Day 4 = January 18, 2014

There's a great website, Knitting Brain, and they have an awesome Knitting Personality Test. The test is super quick with 7 questions. I'm an Artistic Knitters and a weakness of mine is novelty yarns. Now you'd ask what is a novelty yarn? I consider a novelty yarn the $1 or $2 unique/different looking yarns that you can buy at place like A.C. Moore and Big Lots. Another common trait is a lack of information on the label, such as color, yarn size and other items. Keep an eye out for how many times "Not Listed" is filled in when I'm describing the yarns below.

This morning I brought out a lot of my yarn so that I could take pictures without my husband around because of our differing opinions about all the STUFF we have in our house.

So let's get started with the Novelty Yarns.

Novelty yarns are great fun and add a little or a lot, depending on your taste, of pizzazz to a project or stand all on their own for a project. Now I do want to note a few quirks about some novelty yarns:

- Some of the yarns can pull apart.
- There aren't dye lots so you can't guarantee the same exact color in each skein.- The skeins are normally in large bins or boxes, that have been dug through a million times, so you have to go diving to find what you want.
- Since they are in large containers the skeins of yarn are often partially unraveled.
- Labels can also be missing due to being in the large containers.
- You need to know your project to buy the right amount of yarn the first time or buy extra if you don't know exactly what you are going to make.
- The colors can bleed onto your hands and/or knitting needles.
- Cleaning instructions are usually hand wash.

Now I know you are thinking that this is quite a list of quirks, but if you look at all the ones that I have, you will see that it does not deter me one bit. I LOVE novelty yarns.

Question of the Day
Have you ever knit with novelty yarns before?

  1. Yes - thanks to my daughter's encouragement, I've made some scarves with Fun Fir yarn. My 11 and 8 year-old granddaughters love them, so I may try more in the future. Mom
