Casting on our Mobius

Week 18 = Mobius from Cast On to Bind Off
Day 2 = May 1, 2014

There are 2 Mobius cast ons that I will show you tonight. The first is a true Mobius cast on expertly demonstrated in the Cat Bordhi - Intro to Moebius Knitting video below.

The second cast on How to Knit * Moebius Shawl * Moebius Cast on below uses a short cut. This very easy cast on looks slightly different from the Cat Bordhi cast on.

Now both will work just fine for a Mobius, but visually there is a difference. Check out my examples below.

All four of these are the Cat Bordhi Cast On. The 2 pictures on the top are Stockinette and the 2 on the bottom are Reverse Stockinette. The pointer in the 2 pictures on the right is pointing to the cast on row.

My preferred cast on method is Cat Bordhi's because as you can see above there is no visible cast on. It all looks like it is one continuous stockinette or reverse stockinette knit item. Now it does not matter if you are trying the Mobius cast on for the first time or have done many a Mobius, the cast on and first 1-1/2 rows are always a little awkward/tight. This is normal, all you need to do is keep going.

Here are some pictures for my Cuddle Shrug Mobius.
1. The completed cast on with 120 stitches.
2. The "Railroad tracks" double looped circular needles from the cast on (not the little triangles).
3. Preparing to knit my first stitch in my first row into the triangle that is made by the yarn going over the needle.
4. Cast on row plus 1 full row completed.
5. 5 rows knit with a life line that was put in on row 3.

  1. I much prefer the Cat Bordhi cast on. From the example in the pictures above, as Victoria said, this cast on method makes the cast on row effectively invisible...no beginning and no end - a perfect Mobius. Hope mine looks that good once I make one.
